Iran in a tense clash with Japan at the 2026 Asian Handball Championship

TEHRAN – Iran will face Japan in a crucial Group D game at the 2026 Men’s Asian Handball Championship, hosted by Kuwait, on Monday as both teams chase a spot in the knockout round.
In their opening match, Iran fell 24-22 to Saudi Arabia, while Japan opened with a dominant 45-23 win over Australia. In the second round, Iran defeated Australia 39-13, and Japan lost 27-24 to Saudi Arabia.
With these results, Saudi Arabia have secured qualification from Group D with four points. Iran sit second with two points, aided by a better goal difference than Japan, setting the stage for a tense clash.
This third group-stage match gives Iran a chance to advance to the knockout stage by securing a win or, at minimum, a draw against one of Asia’s powerhouses.
A notable aspect of the matchup is Japan’s leading offensive form in Group D, while Iran have showcased the strongest defensive display in the group so far.
The 22nd edition of the Asian Men’s Handball Championship is hosted by Kuwait, and the top four teams will earn berths in the 2027 World Handball Championship in Germany.
