Iran decide to participate at 2026 FIFA World Cup: Official

In a swift turn of events, Taj announced that Team Melli will indeed compete in 2026 World Cup, ending days of speculation sparked by comments from Sports Minister, Ahmad Donyamali, suggesting a possible withdrawal.
Taj emphasized that football should remain an independent sphere focused on athletic excellence and national representation, not political deliberation.
His statement has reassured both players and supporters, rekindling optimism for Iran’s journey toward participation in the prestigious event.
“U.S. president Donald Trump has previously said they cannot secure Iran players’ safety. If they cannot secure our safety in the U.S., FIFA must hold our matches in Mexico,” Taj said.
“We have strongly qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and this is our right to compete in the event. We can also play our matches in Canada if they cannot secure our safety,” he added.
Iran are drawn in Group G along with Belgium, New Zealand and Egypt.
Iran will start the 2026 World Cup on June 15, facing New Zealand in Los Angeles. Team Melli will play Belgium six days later in Los Angeles and meet Egypt on June 26 in Seattle.
